Homily of Pope Francis - Sunday, 19 October 2014
Homily of Pope Francis - Closing Mass of the Extraordinary Synod on the Family and the Beatification of Pope Paul VI (Saint Peter's Square - Sunday, 19 October 2014)
We have just heard one of the most famous phrases in the Gospel: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Goaded by the Pharisees who wanted to give him an exam in religion and catch him in error, Jesus gives this ironic and brilliant reply. It is a striking phrase which the Lord has bequeathed to all those who experience qualms of conscience, particularly when their comfort, their wealth, their prestige, their power and their reputation are in question. This happens all the time; it always has.
Certainly Jesus puts the stress on the second part of the phrase: “and [render] to God the things that are God’s”. This calls for acknowledging and professing – in the face of any sort of power – that God alone is the Lord of mankind, that there is no other. This is the perennial newness to be discovered each day, and it requires mastering the fear which we often feel at God’s surprises.
God is not afraid of new things! That is why he is continually surprising us, opening our hearts and guiding us in unexpected ways. He renews us: he constantly makes us “new”. A Christian who lives the Gospel is “God’s newness” in the Church and in the world. How much God loves this “newness”! “Rendering to God the things that are God’s” means being docile to his will, devoting our lives to him and working for his kingdom of mercy, love and peace.
Here is where our true strength is found; here is the leaven, which makes it grow, and the salt, which gives flavor to all our efforts to combat the prevalent pessimism which the world proposes to us. Here too is where our hope is found, for when we put our hope in God we are neither fleeing from reality nor seeking an alibi: instead, we are striving to render to God what is God’s. That is why we Christians look to the future, God’s future. It is so that we can live this life to the fullest – with our feet firmly planted on the ground – and respond courageously to whatever new challenges to come our way.
In these days, during the extraordinary Synod of Bishops, we have seen how true this is. “Synod” means “journeying together”. And indeed pastors and lay people from every part of the world have come to Rome, bringing the voice of their particular Churches in order to help today’s families walk the path the Gospel with their gaze fixed on Jesus. It has been a great experience, in which we have lived synodality and collegiality, and felt the power of the Holy Spirit who constantly guides and renews the Church. For the Church is called to waste no time in seeking to bind up open wounds and to rekindle hope in so many people who have lost hope.
For the gift of this Synod and for the constructive spirit which everyone has shown, in union with the Apostle Paul “we give thanks to God always for you all, constantly mentioning you in our prayers.” May the Holy Spirit, who during these busy days has enabled us to work generously, in true freedom and humble creativity, continue to guide the journey which, in the Churches throughout the world, is bringing us to the Ordinary Synod of Bishops in October 2015. We have sown and we continued to sow, patiently and perseveringly, in the certainty that it is the Lord who gives growth to what we have sown.
On this day of the Beatification of Pope Paul VI, I think of the words with which he established the Synod of Bishops: “by carefully surveying the signs of the times, we are making every effort to adapt ways and methods… to the growing needs of our time and the changing conditions of society.” When we look to this great Pope, this courageous Christian, this tireless apostle, we cannot but say in the sight of God a word as simple as it is heartfelt and important: thanks! Thank you, our dear and beloved Pope Paul VI! Thank you for your humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church!
In his personal journal, the great helmsman of the Council wrote, at the conclusion of its final session: “Perhaps the Lord has called me and preserved me for this service not because I am particularly fit for it, or so that I can govern and rescue the Church from her present difficulties, but so that I can suffer something for the Church, and in that way it will be clear that he, and no other, is her guide and savior.” In this humility the grandeur of Blessed Paul VI shines forth: before the advent of a secularized and hostile society, he could hold fast, with farsightedness and wisdom – and at times alone – to the helm of the barque of Peter, while never losing his joy and his trust in the Lord. Paul VI truly “rendered to God what is God’s” by devoting his whole life to the “sacred, solemn and grave task of continuing in history and extending on earth the mission of Christ,” loving the Church and leading her so that she might be “a loving mother of the whole human family and at the same time the minister of its salvation.”
Certainly Jesus puts the stress on the second part of the phrase: “and [render] to God the things that are God’s”. This calls for acknowledging and professing – in the face of any sort of power – that God alone is the Lord of mankind, that there is no other.
“The doctrine is not changing but developing to provide answers to vital challenges,” UGCC Head
In an Italian language interview with Radio Vatican, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, UGCC Father and Head shared his thoughts on the work of the Synod and explained the essence of the document. Your Beatitude, and the [small groups] of the Pontifical Synod began working and discussions about the document of Cardinal Erdo took place.
This document is not the final or official document of the work of the Synod, but rather a draft, a collection of various presentations by the synodal fathers during the meetings last week. It cannot be perceived as the final summary of our discussions. Right now in our work groups we are studying this text: there are many criticisms, some members of our group think that some things should be changed, supplemented, so that our appeal to the Holy Father as well as to our faithful should be thought out and understandable. First of all, we want to once more confirm the Church doctrine regarding marriage. We have no intentions of changing or denying something as is now often being reported in the mass media. We are concerned about the challenges which come not from inside the Church, but from the outside. The Synod Fathers are looking for the best method to respond to these challenges, to propose in a new way the Gospel of the family in a positive and bright light.
What, in your opinion is the biggest shortcoming of this document and why did it create so much misunderstanding?
The formulation of the expressions has to necessarily be more exact. As is known, very often it is the devil, who hides behind details. Sometimes the intentions and the authentic thoughts of the fathers do not coincide with the formed text. And this creates certain misunderstandings. That is exactly why right now we are trying to express ourselves in the most understandable manner: on the one hand, to better discuss this topic, and on the other hand – to propose the traditional doctrine of the Catholic Church in the keys of the new evangelization.
Thus, the doctrine does not change with the flow of time during history?
The doctrine does not change – it develops, i.e., clarifies itself, in order to answer certain challenges. In Church history the doctrines were formed as answers of Christians to some heresies or the improper understanding of Christian faith from the surrounding world. Today we have new challenges, new difficulties in accepting traditional doctrines of the Church, and therefore we have to explain some aspects of the teachings of the Church in order to provide certain guidelines, especially of a practical character for the pastoral service of the Church. This synod is not doctrinal. We gathered here not for the purpose of discussing a doctrine, but to share pastoral experiences. During this Synod we contemplated the great sufferings of the Christian family in the current world and those attacks that are aimed at it.
So called “irregular situations” i.e. those couples who cannot be acknowledged by the Church as marriages but towards which the Church takes a position of mercy and perception. What do they need and expect today?
Mainly we are attempting to confirm the Church doctrine that the family is an authentic, indissoluble and sacred union between a man and a woman. Other attempts of cohabitation cannot be regarded as a family. However, at the same time, it is important to acknowledge : for example, if a man and a woman even without a Church marriage live in a stable, fruitful, and faithful union, then in it are present those semina verbi [seeds of truth], which should be appropriately respected. At this Synod, perhaps for the first time, the attention of the pastors extends beyond the boundaries of their church enclosure, in order to examine the situation of mortal sin and assist these people in gaining evangelical ideals.
Mass media also talks about the openness to same-sex couples...
We did not talk about openness to same-sex couples but rather about the suffering of those people. In my presentation I said that we could not consider a homosexual orientation in itself a blessing, in other words something good. It is a heavy trial, a burden and a problem which causes suffering. Wounds which are inflicted by this phenomenon are not dependent on how we perceive it: positive or negative. Therefore we have to look at this issue with open eyes. A person cannot be identified by her or his homosexual tendency. We should look at this person, respect them as a likeness of God, taking into account the person's real existential dimensions, and in the light of the Gospel, to help the person in her/his sufferings.

Blessed Pope Paul VI
Giovanni Battista Montini was born on September 26, 1897, at Concesio in Lombardy of a wealthy family. His father was a non-practicing lawyer turned editor and a courageous promoter of the Catholic Social Movement. Pope Paul VI was a frail but intelligent child who received his early education from the Jesuits near his home in Brescia. Even after entering the seminary in 1916, Pope Paul VI lived at home because of his health.
Pope Paul VI was ordained a priest on May 29, 1920, and was sent to Rome to study at Gregorian University and the University of Rome. In 1922 Pope Paul VI transferred to the Accademia dei Nobili Ecclesiastici to study diplomacy while continuing his canon law studies at Gregorian University. Pope Paul VI went to Warsaw as attaché of the nunciature, but due to the effect of the severe Polish winters on his health, Pope Paul VI was recalled to Rome just one year later in 1924. Having obtained his degree in canon law, Pope Paul VI was assigned to the office of the Secretariat of State where he remained for the next thirty years. Pope Paul VI was named chaplain to the Federation of Italian Catholic University Students, a decisive assignment vital to his future relations with the founders of the post-war Christian Democratic Party. In 1937 Pope Paul VI was named Substitute for Ordinary Affairs.
A real danger to the papacy existed during World War II. Some believed that the Germans would take the pope and his chief aides north. Throughout this period, Pope Paul VI organized extensive relief work and directed the care of political refugees and prisoners of war. In 1953, Pope Paul VI was appointed Archbishop of Milan without the title of cardinal. He took possession of his new See on January 5, 1955, and soon became known as the "Archbishop of the Workers."
Pope Paul VI revitalized the Archdiocese of Milan, preached the social message of the Gospel, worked to win back the working class, promoted Catholic education at every level, and supported the Catholic press. Worldwide attention was given to the Archbishop of Milan because of his strong impact on the revitalization of Milan. Pope Paul VI was appointed to the Central Preparatory Commission for Vatican II and also to the Technical Organizational Commission.
Pope Paul VI was elected pope on June 21, 1963, with a determination to hold firm to basic Catholic teaching on faith. Pope Paul VI was a strong supporter of collegiality, the collective responsibility of all the bishops under the pope for the general welfare of the Church. Throughout the pontificate of Pope Paul VI the tension between papal primacy and the collegiality of the episcopacy was a source of conflict. On September 14, 1965, Pope Paul VI announced the establishment of the Synod of Bishops called for by the Council fathers. Celibacy, removed from the debate of the fourth session of the Council, was made the subject of an encyclical, June 24, 1967; the regulation of birth was treated in Humanae vitae July 24, 1968, his last encyclical. The controversies over these two pronouncements tended to overshadow the last years of Pope Paul VI's pontificate.
Those who knew Pope Paul VI describe him as a brilliant man, deeply spiritual, humble, and gentle, a man of "infinite courtesy." His successful conclusion of Vatican II has left its mark on the history of the Church. History will also record his well received address to the United Nations in 1965, his encyclical Populorum progressio (1967), his second great social letter, Octogesima adveniens (1971), and his apostolic exhortation, Evangelii nuntiandi, his last major pronouncement which touched on the conception of liberation and salvation. Pope Paul VI supported all efforts for social advancement in the emerging nations of the Third World. Pope Paul VI's first papal visit was to the United Nations headquarters in New York on October 4, 1965, and he was the first pope to visit all five continents, and the first since Saint Peter to visit the Holy Land. Pope Paul VI will be remembered for his work toward the reunion of all Christians, his reaching out to the multitudes of non-Christian religions, his internationalizing the Roman Curia and his untiring work for peace. Pope Paul VI had an exceptional capacity for work which lasted until the end. Pope Paul VI died on the Feast of the Transfiguration, August 6, 1978, at the pope's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo. Pope Paul VI requested a simple funeral with no catafalque (a raised and decorated platform on which the coffin of a distinguished person lies in state) and no monument over his grave.
