REMEMBER YOUR BAPTISM

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway of life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.  Through Baptism, we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through the water in the word.”
The Liturgical celebration of the Baptism of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ should prompt us and motivate us to review our own Baptism, its meaning as well as its obligation for us. We would like to offer five short but very practical suggestions on how we can renew our own Baptismal commitment as we contemplate Jesus being baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan River.  In His Baptism the sublime mystery of the Blessed Trinity is revealed.  The Father’s voice is heard; the Son (Jesus) descends into the waters of the Jordan; the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus in the form of a dove.” (Mt. 3:13-17)

  1. SIGN OF THE CROSS:  One of the most noteworthy signs of belonging to the Catholic faith is the Sign of the Cross. Every time we make the sign of the cross, we profess our belief in the Mystery of the Blessed Trinity—One God in three separate and distinct Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  This should be a brief moment when we call to mind our own Baptism and the dignity that flows from that sacred moment.  As the Baptismal waters trickled off our forehead and the words of Baptism were pronounced by the priest, gifts in abundance descended into our souls.  We became a son of God, brother to Jesus Christ and friend to the Holy Spirit.  For this reason, Pope St. Leo the Great exhorts us: “Christians recognize your dignity.”  It all started at the moment of Baptism!
  2. YOUR BAPTISM DATE:  If you do not know the specific date of your Baptism or the dates of the Baptisms of your children, why not look it up this week. Celebrate! As human persons we are called to celebrate! Wedding anniversaries, birthdays, Holidays—all are moments to celebrate. Why not add a new category?  Baptism dates!  As a catechetical tool, parents can surely catechize their children by calling to mind their child’s baptism in the context of a celebration. Why not buy a cake and candles. However, go beyond the eating and singing. Explain to the child the “why” of this celebration. This was your second birthday.  You were born of water and the spirit on the day of your baptism. You became a child of God; you entered into a new family, the Church, the People of God!
  3. HOLY WATER:  Use holy water often! Upon entering the church, it is a good habit to sign yourself with holy water. At home before retiring every night it is a good habit for parents to bless their children in the name of the Blessed Trinity with holy water. Once again, call to mind your own baptism every time holy water is sprinkled! St. Teresa of Avila states that the use of holy water is a powerful means to expel the devil from your presence!  In our Baptism the priest/deacon carried out a minor exorcism! Our Baptismal grace far exceeds the power of the devil!
  4. ATTEND BAPTISMS:  Every time you attend the Sacrament of Baptism call to mind your own Baptism. Baptism calls us to renounce the devil, as well as sin as our mortal enemy number one! If you are called to be a Sponsor, even more should the renewal of our baptismal promises be reinforced. Both parents and godparents are called to live out the symbol of the Baptismal candle. That means that Jesus is the principal LIGHT, but we are called to take from His light and share this light to the whole world especially the godchildren that God has entrusted to us!   Once again allow the words of St. Leo the Great to echo in the depths of your heart: “Christians recognize your dignity.”
  5. MISSIONARY CALL:  Before ascending into heaven, Jesus gave to the Apostles as well as to us our marching orders, our mission, our task to carry out. Read slowly and meditate on Jesus’ last words: “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you. And behold I am with you always, until the end of the age.”(Mt. 28:18-20). The message!  It could not be clearer! Jesus summons all the baptized to bring the grace of their own baptism to the entire world. The grace of God, the presence of the Trinity is not meant to be hidden under the bushel-basket but to shine and to be shared with the entire world!
Let us conclude by listening to the consoling words of Pope Benedict XVI: “Through Baptism each child is inserted into a gathering of friends who never abandon him in life or in death…This group of friends, this family of God, into which the child is now admitted, will always accompany him, even on days of suffering and in life’s dark nights; it will give him consolation, comfort and light.”  With these words from the Holy Father and practical advice, let us strive to live  out our Baptism to the fullest extent possible—to become shining stars of holiness, reflecting the Light of Christ!

Celebrate the Feast

by Lou Pizzuti

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas my true love gave to me . . . a lot of stuff. We know the song. And then Christmas is over, right?
Well, not really.
Now, if we listen to our culture, we’d think that Christmas ends sooner. How often do we see discarded trees, waiting to be picked up as early as December 26? And finding a radio station playing Christmas Carols during the 12 Days of Christmas? Bah.
But, as Christians, should we be marching to the beat of the culture? Or should we follow the Church and be counter cultural?
Yes, some of us keep Christmas going throughout the 12 Days – but that’s only the beginning of the season. The Nativity account in Matthew’s Gospel tells the story of the Visit of the Magi, traditionally celebrated (in the West) on January 6, the Feast of Epiphany. Some even go so far as to remember the season includes the Baptism of Christ, on the following Sunday. But longer?
Yes. Luke’s Gospel includes the Presentation of the Temple, celebrated on February 2, as part of the Nativity narrative. February 2. Forty days after Christmas.
Forty Days for Christmas.
Forty Days for Lent.
Forty Days from Easter to Ascension.
Do you see a pattern here?
If you’re part of a liturgical tradition – Orthodox, Eastern Catholic, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, and even some other Protestant groups – you have a liturgical calendar – and you have this rhythm of liturgical seasons, given to you as a gift.
Why a gift?
Let’s start with Easter. It’s a feast. It is, in fact, the feast of feasts for Christians. As the Byzantine Troparion for Easter says, “Christ is risen from the tomb, trampling down death by death. And upon those in the tombs bestowing life”. The feast is 40 days until the Ascension. But, it’s preceded by 40 days of fasting and prayer, a time of introspection, repentance.
So, how does that relate to Christmas?
Christmas is itself preceded by a period of preparation. In the West, it begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas – Advent. In the Byzantine tradition, it’s – are you ready – FORTY DAYS, starting right after St. Philip’s feast on November 15.
In the secular culture, Advent has been eclipsed by Christmas. You can hear carols on the radio as soon you put away the decorations from that great holy day of secular culture, Halloween. From November 1 until December 25, it’s a time of increasing celebration, gluttony, and consumerism, and there is no thought of Advent, nobody cares to prepare the way of the Lord. Then, once the day arrives, there’s no more energy to really celebrate.
It’s just another symptom of the culture’s marginalization of Christianity.
The Church has given us a rhythm of spiritual life, of liturgical life (really, shouldn’t they reflect each other?).
Oughtn’t we, as Christians, choose, rather than following the culture, become counter-cultural?

Celebrate Christmas, my friends.

The Baptism Of Our Lord Jesus Christ (January 6)

On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, a Christian is transported by his thoughts and feelings to a time long since passed. He directs his attention to that which was accomplished at the Jordan, and his heart is filled with reverent trembling. A Christian contemplates Heaven opening over the Jordan and the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus Christ in the form of a dove. He hears the very voice of the Heavenly Father: “This is my Beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3: 17). These unusual manifestations leave a profound impression in the heart of a believing Christian, evoking in it wonder and piety. From the depths of his enraptured heart the Christian involuntarily cries out: “Great art Thou, O Lord, and marvelous are Thy works, and there is no word which suffices to hymn Thy wonders.”
On the feast of the Lord’s Baptism, a Christian meditates on the reason our Lord Jesus Christ, born without sin and not having sinned during His earthly life, should come to Jordan together with sinners in order to receive Baptism from John. The Christian calls to mind the sinful Fall of his forefathers; their punishment by the Lord God, required by God’s justice. He meditates on the sundering of man’s bond with his Creator and upon God’s merciful promise not to leave man without care. The Lord placed enmity between the seed of the serpent and the seed of mankind (Gen. 3: 15). The Lord promised even our forefathers that a time will come when his descendants shall crush the head of the Serpent-tempter. The Old Testament tree of life shall be replaced by the New Testament Body and Blood of the Only-Begotten Son of God, Who shall come to earth to save the world. “He who eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day”  -  thus speaks Jesus Christ Himself (John 6:54). Because of this it was necessary that man again recognize his Creator and Savior. It was needful to strengthen man’s faith in his Savior. It was necessary for people to learn that the Father and Son, according to the word of Jesus Christ, are one: “The Father is in Me and I am in the Father” (John 10:38). And now our Lord Jesus Christ reveals Himself to the world. He comes to the Jordan to receive Baptism from John. During the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan the Holy Spirit descends upon Him in the form of a dove, while the Heavenly Father witnesses to Him with the words: “This is my Beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” There was a true Theophany at the Jordan! Here also at the Jordan it became clear to John the Baptist Who it was that had come to him to be Baptized from Nazareth in Galilee. “I myself did not know Him.” John said later, “but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me. ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’  And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God” (John l:33-34). The next day, looking at Jesus as He walked, John said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” (John 1:35-36).
Pride was the source of the sin of our forefathers, for they desired to become like their Creator, “like God, knowing good and evil” (Gen. 3:5). Our Lord Jesus Christ, accepting baptism from His creature, shows an example of great humility.  He, ‘‘though He was in the form of God, did not think it robbery to be equal with God, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.” Christ the Savior turns to John the Baptist not as God but as a humble Man asking baptism in order to fulfill ‘‘all truth.’’ Thus is pride overthrown by humility. “Jesus, when he began His ministry, was about thirty years of age” (Luke 3:23).  Before His entry into the public ministry of mankind’s salvation, Christ the Savior comes to Jordan and receives baptism from John. As Man, in this sacred act He strengthens His powers by the grace of the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove. . . At the age of thirty the God-Man reveals Himself to the people, fulfilling by this act the custom of the Talmud-nourished Hebrew people who, especially after the return from Babylonian captivity, strictly kept the letter of the Law. According to the understanding of the Hebrews of that time, a man who had not reached thirty years could be neither a priest nor a teacher. And the Lord Jesus Christ, who came not to destroy but to fulfill the Old Testament Law, begins to preach at the age of thirty. It was at this age also that John the Baptist appeared at the Jordan with the call for people to repent.

The Great Blessing of Water

The rite of the Great Blessing of Water is celebrated in the Ukrainian Catholic Church after the vesperal divine liturgy on the eve of the feast of the Epiphany [Theophany], and after the Eucharistic liturgy on the day itself. It begins with the chanting of special hymns with the incensing of the water, and concludes with bible readings, petitions and prayers.
You came, O Lord, taking the form of a servant, Asking for baptism though you have no sin. The waters saw You and were afraid. The Forerunner began to tremble and cried out, saying: How shall the lamp-stand illumine the Light? How shall the servant lay hands upon the Master? Sanctify both me and the waters, O Savior, Who takes away the sins of the world.
That He might sanctify both me and the waters... Let us then draw water in gladness, O brothers,
For upon those that draw in faith The grace of the Spirit is invisibly bestowed by Christ  The God and Savior of our souls.
Today the nature of the waters is sanctified, The Jordan bursts forth and turns back the flood of its streams, Seeing the Master wash Himself. To the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord,

God has sent His only-begotten Son "not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him." (Jn 3:17) He has sent the Lord Jesus Christ not only to save people's souls, but to save their bodies, and not only to save human beings, but to save the entire creation.

You are great, O Lord, and Your works are wondrous, and there are no words capable of hymning Your wonders... For of Your own will You brought all things in to being from nothing, by Your power You uphold the whole of creation, and by Your providence You order the world... The sun sings to You, the moon glorifies You, the stars meet together before Your face, the light obeys You, the deeps shudder before You, the water springs serve You... We confess Your grace, we proclaim Your mercy, we conceal not Your gracious acts: You have set free our mortal nature. By Your birth You have sanctified the Virgin's womb. All creation sings praises to You Who have revealed Yourself. For You, our God, have appeared upon earth and have dwelled among men. You have sanctified the Jordan streams... Therefore, O Master, be present here now by the descent of the Holy Spirit, and sanctify this water. Give it the blessing of Jordan. Make it a fountain of incorruption, a gift of sanctification, a remission of sins, a protection against disease, a destruction of demons... and may it be for those who will partake of it, to the cleansing of their souls and bodies, to the healing of their passions, to the sanctification of their homes, to every expedient purpose...

Since the Son of God has taken human flesh and has appeared in the world, manifesting Himself in His baptism in the Jordan, all flesh and all matter is sanctified. Everything is made pure and holy in Him. Everything which is corrupted and polluted by the sinful works of men is cleansed and purified by the gracious works of God. All death-dealing powers of the devil which poison the good world of God's creation are destroyed. All things are again made new. Through the "prime element" of water on the feast of the Epiphany the entire creation is shown to be sanctified by God's Word through the same Spirit of God who "in the beginning... was moving over the face of the waters." (Gen 1:2)

Come, O ye faithful, Let us praise the greatness of God's dispensation toward us, For He who became Man because of our transgressions  And who alone is clean and undefiled, Was for our cleansing Himself cleansed in the Jordan

VERSES AT THE VESPERS OF THE THEOPHANY

The Forerunner beheld our Enlightenment, Who has brought light to all mankind, draw near for baptism: and he rejoiced in soul while his hand trembled. And he showed Him to the people, saying: “Behold, the Redeemer of Israel, Who sets us free from corruption.” O sinless Christ our God, glory to You.

The hosts of angels were filled with fear, as they saw our Deliverer baptized by a servant and receiving witness through the coming of the Spirit. And the Father’s voice was heard from on high: “He upon Whom the Forerunner lays his hand, the same is My beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased.” O Christ our God, glory to You.

The streams of the Jordan received You Who are the fountain, and the Comforter descended in the form of a dove.
He Who bowed the heavens, bowed His head, and the clay cried aloud to Him that formed him: “Why do You command of me what lies beyond my power? For I have need to be baptized of You.” O sinless Christ our God, glory to You.
Wishing to save man gone astray, You have not disdained to clothe Yourself in the form of a servant. For it befitted You, as Master and God, to take upon Yourself our nature for our sakes. For You, O Deliverer, have been baptized in the flesh, making us worthy of forgiveness. Therefore, we cry to You: “O Christ our God and Benefactor, glory to You.

Mary, Mother Of All, For Every Day Of The Year

How did Mary experience the first Christmas? Mary too heard the words explaining the event that she herself saw and lived. Words and deeds that she pondered in her heart, in herself in a conscious, thoughtful and intelligent listening. The heart indicates this. The inner listening of Mary is a prolonged one, not a single moment. The Gospel phrase, “she kept all these things, meditating on them in her heart,” says that the guard of Mary was not a keeping passive or inert, but an active and alive one, connecting and comparing one thing with another trying to understand the profound logic, the direction and the truth of things that may seem unrelated or even conflicting. It is precisely what Mary did, feeling on one hand the words that proclaimed the glory of the Child (words heard from the angel at the Annunciation) and, on the other hand, seeing "a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger.” It is the usual tension between greatness and littleness, glory and poverty that is the backbone of the Christian event. Mary’s listening thus becomes a true interpretation that sheds light on the mystery of Jesus.
Mary is not only the mother of Jesus, she is also his most profound interpreter. She explains Christmas, because it is not easy to understand Christmas. So, let us be guided by Mary, who kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Her heart and her mind were seeking the golden thread that held together the opposites: a stable and "a multitude of angels," a manger and a "kingdom which has no end." Like her, like the shepherds and the Magi, let’s save at least astonishment. At Christmas the Word is an infant who cannot talk, the Lord is just in the morning of life, the Almighty is a child capable only of crying. God always starts in this way, with small things and in deep silence. God decided to reveal himself born as a child. This is the depth of the mystery of Christmas told by the Nativity in Bethlehem, of our churches and of our homes.
For thirty years, Christ lived this humble and simple life to save us. His mother embraced this life. This hidden life is embraced today, every day, by the Consecrated Virgins in the world. By placing their hope in the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Consecrated Virgins in the world look to Mary as "the prototype of the consecrated life because she is the mother who welcomes, listens to, intercedes and contemplates her Lord with praise of the heart" . Mary is the model, guide and Mother in all the fundamental elements of the consecrated life: in the evangelical following, in the way of marriage to Christ (Jn 2,4-5. 11 12), with "undivided heart" (1 Cor 7, 32), in evangelical poverty like the life in Bethlehem and Nazareth (Luke 1-2; Mt 1-2), in obedience to the salvific plan of God (Lk 1:38);in virginity spiritually, fruitful under the action of Holy Spirit, to be "the Woman" in union with Christ (Luke 1, 35; Jn 2: 4), in the availability to service and mission for the Church toward a new kind of motherhood (Jn 19, 25, 27; Rev. 12: 1); in the life of the Church as a fraternal bond of communion and help for the spiritual, apostolic, intellectual and human life.
